In a letter to Hugh Shields (12 September 1979), Jean Mouzat wrote:

 “J’aurais beaucoup  à dire sur les vieilles chansons de Limousin / Sud.  Je les chante encore, ma voix étant en moi ce qui reste de plus vigoureux. Et je n’oublie pas que bien qu’érudit, médiéviste, Dr ès lettres etc. je suis le dernier terme d’une longue lignée de Limousins qui se sont transmis leurs vieux airs et leurs poèmes de père en fils et de bouche à l’oreille. . . .”

 [I could say plenty about the old songs of Limousin and the South. I still sing them, my voice being the strongest thing left to me. And I don’t forget that in spite of being a medieval scholar with a doctorate etc, I am the last of a long line of Limousins transmitting their old airs and their poems orally from father to son. . . . ]

Hugh donated his collection of song recordings on reels (including those of French and Occitanian traditional songs and song texts) to the Irish Traditional Music Archive in Dublin (itma.ie)
